Joseph S. Bertino Jr., Pharm.D., has more than 30 years of experience in the area of drug development and clinical pharmacology. Dr. Bertino received his B.S. and Pharm.D. from the University at Buffalo. He spent four years as a pediatric pharmacologist at Rainbow Babies and Children’s Hospital, Case Western Reserve University, Cleveland, OH. Over the next two decades he was a member of the professional staff at Bassett Healthcare in Cooperstown, NY. During that time, he served as Section Chief for Clinical Pharmacology and Co-Director of the Clinical Pharmacology Research Center (conducting Phase I, II, and III research). In these positions, he was active in direct patient care, clinical pharmacology research, the training of medical and pharmacy residents and clinical pharmacology fellows, served on the Institutional Review Board, and had administrative responsibilities (such as P&T Committee Secretary, budget and personnel management). In 2005, he was recruited to start a Phase I unit and as the Scientific Director, was active in establishing the unit, recruiting and training staff, oversight of scientific integrity, protocol development and business development.

Dr. Bertino has served on the U.S. Food and Drug Administration anti-infective and antiviral advisory committees and is currently a special government employee of the FDA. He was the 2006 recipient of the American College of Clinical Pharmacology’s Investigator of the Year Award. He is an Associate Professor of Pharmacology at the College of Physicians and Surgeons, Columbia University and a Clinical Associate Professor at the University at Buffalo School of Pharmacy.

Areas of particular clinical and research expertise include pharmacogenetics and pharmacogenomics as they relate to drug metabolism. He has recognized expertise in vaccine development and the application of principles of clinical pharmacology to vaccines. Dr. Bertino provides legal consultation services in the areas of medical errors, medication adverse events, toxicology and lack of therapeutic response.

Anne N. Nafziger, M.D., M.H.S., Ph.D., is a clinical pharmacologist with more than 20 years of experience in the area of clinical research and drug development. Dr. Nafziger received her M.D. from Case Western Reserve University, Cleveland, OH, her M.H.S. (Master of Health Science in Epidemiology, Chronic Disease Epidemiology) from The Johns Hopkins University School of Hygiene and Public Health, Baltimore, MD, and her Ph.D. in Epidemiology and Public Health from the Department of Public Health and Clinical Medicine, Umeå University, Umeå, Sweden.

She began her career at Bassett Healthcare in Cooperstown, NY. While there, she was an attending physician in the Division of Clinical Pharmacology, Director of the Preventive Cardiology Clinic, and a primary care internist in both inpatient and outpatient settings. In addition, Dr. Nafziger was Co-Director of the Clinical Pharmacology Research Center (conducting Phase I, II, and III research) and active in the training of medical, surgical and pharmacy residents and clinical pharmacology fellows. She also served as Chair of the Institutional Review Board. In 2005, she was recruited to start a Phase I unit and as the Medical Director, was active in designing and establishing the unit, recruiting and training staff (including in Good Clinical Practices), developing Standard Operating Procedures, oversight of medical care and medical staff, and protocol development.

Dr. Nafziger has been active in the design and conduct of clinical trials, including data management and statistical analyses. She served as Principal Investigator on over 50 clinical trials and as a sub-investigator with active study conduct responsibilities for over 90 clinical trials. She has passed the American College of Cardiology Electrocardiography Examination and provides ECG over-reading for clinical trials.

Areas of particular clinical and research expertise include pharmacogenetics and pharmacogenomics as they relate to drug metabolism, sex differences, epidemiology and prevention. Dr. Nafziger has recognized expertise in the application of clinical pharmacology principles, clinical trial design, and data analyses. Clinical areas of expertise include preventive cardiology (dyslipidemia, hypertension, glucose intolerance and diabetes mellitus, smoking cessation, weight management), the epidemiology of obesity, women’s health, and sex differences in pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics.
